Soldier and policeman killed in Ambon boat attack

A soldier and a policeman have been killed and four other people wounded in an attack on a speedboat in the Indonesian province of Central Maluku.

The A-F-P newsagency quotes witnesses as saying a group of unidentified gunmen attacked the speedboat carrying the security officers and eight Muslims, who were travelling to Leihitu district on Seram island.

The policeman was killed outright and the soldier died later in hospital in the provincial capital, Ambon.

The four injured are also being treated in hospital.

Ambon and surrounding islands have suffered violent sectarian clashes between the Muslim and Christian communities since 1999.

On Monday, a bomb killed two people and wounded 15 in Ambon city.
