At least 23 killed in Indonesia train collision

At least 36 people have been killed and 64 injured in a head-on collision between two trains in Indonesia's West Java province.

Rescue workers are still at the scene trying to retrieve bodies and hoping to find any other survivors from the crash which has been blamed on a conductor who was killed in the tragedy.

They say the trains -- the Cirebon Express and the Empu Jaya travelling from Jakarta and bound for Yogyakarta in Central Java -- collided at the city's main station shortly before four am local time.

A senior police official in Cirebon says it appears the collision was due to "human error".
