Indonesia still to decide on detention centres

,The Indonesian government has not yet decided whether to build more detention centres for illegal immigrants as proposed by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

Speaking at a parliamentary hearing, Justice and Human Rights Minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra said the government was planning to build nine centres on five islands.

But ministry spokesman R-H Chapha says nothing has yet been decided and talks on the issue are continuing.

Mr Mahendra said yesterday that nearly 17-hundred illegal refugees had entered Indonesia since January 2000 ..most of them from the Middle East and Central Asia who had planned to continue on to Australia.
