Thousands left homeless after West Papua fire

Thousands of people have been left homeless after a fire gutted hundreds of dwellings in Jayapura, capital of West Papua also known as Irian Jaya.

The Jakarta Post says a thousand families lost their homes in the blaze, believed to be the biggest ever in the city.

It says panicky residents blocked the streets and hampered firefighters, who also had to draw water from more than a kilometre away.

An exploding gas stove is believed to have sparked the fire.

Residents are being temporarily housed in a sports centre pending further aid.
