Indonesian court quashes conviction of "Tommy" Suharto

An Indonesian court has quashed the conviction of "Tommy" Mandala Putra, the son of former President Suharto.

Mark Bowling reports "Tommy" has been on the run since he was sentenced to 18 months in jail for corruption last year.

Tommy has been declared Indonesia's most wanted man and accused of masterminding the assassination of a judge who originally found him guilty. Police have also accused the youngest son of former President Suharto of ordering a spate of bombings in Jakarta. One of several Supreme Court Judges involved in the review of the corruption case said Tommy should never have been found guilty. A year ago Indonesia's Supreme Court convicted Tommy in a multi million dollar real estate scam that involved one of his companies and the state's main food distribution agency. But in reviewing the case the court found that although Tommy's company had been involved in the scam, Tommy himself had not and had not been working within the company structure at the time. Mark Bowling, Jakarta.
