Food begins to reach starving Afghans
The United Nations has began distributing emergency food aid inside Afghanistan, but some aid agencies warn that the supplies fall way short of demand. With wheat convoys rolling into the country from Pakistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, the first supplies for actual distribution are on their way from Kabul warehouses to the impoverished central region of Hazarajat. The World Food Programme says the distribution will be closely monitored to ensure it goes to the people targeted by the organisation.
Following a two-week lull in operations following the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States, the WFP has trucked several thousand tonnes of wheat into Afghanistan in the past three days. However, some aid agencies say the current volume of food shipments is nowhere near sufficient to meet the needs of the eight million Afghans targeted for emergency assistance.
