President Arroyo vows to raise Spratly dispute during Beijing visit
Philippine President Gloria Arroyo has said she will raise the Spratly islands issue when she meets Chinese leaders today, but says she's confident the territorial row will not derail her visit.
Apart from the Philippines and China, the potentially-resource-rich island chain is disputed in whole or in part by several countries in the region, including Vietnam.
Speaking ahead of her visit to Beijing, the Philippine leader noted that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations was leading a drive to formulate a code of conduct covering the South China Sea.
But correspondents say agreement on the code has been blocked by disagreements over the area it would cover... with Vietnam pushing for the Chinese-occupied Paracel islands to be included, along with the Spratlys.
President Arroyo says she expects to sign three agreements with Chinese leaders including Premier Zhu Rongji -- covering narcotics, extradition and transnational crimes.
