Opposition says Beazley has played minor role in APEC

Australia's Federal Opposition leader, Kim Beazley, says the Prime Minister has played a minor role in the APEC summit.

Mr Beazley says the Federal Government has overseen a downfall in Australia's contribution to the conference.

He says Mr Howard is continuing to struggle with communication with Indonesia and can't solve the problem of asylum seekers without cooperation from Indonesia.

Mr Beazley says ties with Indonesia were healthy under the last Federal Labor Government and he would be able to restore a good relationship.

"Now I don't know what will happen during the course of the day and I know that there is an all court press between our diplomats and others to try to get a decent formal meeting between John Howard and President Megawati but we now know enough about the character of relationships even if that does place there is a major question mark over our Prime Minister's capacity to deliver on that."
