Howard addresses APEC summit

Australia's Prime Minister, John Howard, has told the Asia-Pacific summit it must make both economic and strategic responses to terrorism.

Graeme Dobell reports from the APEC summit in Shanghai

The Asia Pacific leaders spent the morning discussing APEC's free trade agenda for the next decade. Then they devoted an hour and a half over lunch to a declaration on terrorism. Prime Minister, John Howard, was one of the designated speakers. He told the leaders that the war against terrorists is not an attack on Islam. Outside the meeting, Indonesia's foreign minister said Indonesia as the largest Muslim country conveyed the message that Islam is a religion of peace.
