Cambodia reviews the Paris Peace Accord after ten years
Cambodians have been reviewing the successes, failures and achievements of the Paris peace accords, ten years after the signing of the agreement which ended three decades of civil war.
At a two-day national conference organized by the Cambodian Institute for Cooperation and Peace, the agreement was hailed as the foundation for peace building in the wartorn nation.
More than 500 Cambodians and foreigners participated in the conference, including Prime Minister Hun Sen .
Tuesday has been declared a national holiday to honour the anniversary of the accord which was signed in Paris on October 23, 1991, by four Cambodian political factions. The agreement put Cambodia under the supervision of the United Nations, and culminated in a free election which launched Cambodia as a fledgling democracy after decades of conflict and the genocide perpetrated by the 1970s Khmer Rouge regime.
