US removes Cambodia from drug list
United States President George W. Bush has removed Cambodia from a list of major illegal drug-producing or drug-transit countries.
In a letter to key lawmakers, the President says Cambodia no longer meets the standard for a major drug-transit country and has been removed from the list.
He said it would be kept under observation as a country of concern.
Cambodia was added to the list in 1996 as a transit nation for US-bound heroin.
President Bush's letter says there has been no evidence of such transit in recent years.
Countries remaining on the list - a requirement under a 1961 foreign aid bill - include China, India, Laos, Pakistan, Thailand and Vietnam.
