Vietnam to consider banning foetal sex tests
Vietnam is considering banning foetal sex tests in the early stages of pregnancy to prevent parents from abusing the technology to abort unwanted girls.
Family planning officials said the proposed ban is one of raft of measures put forward by the National Committee for Population and Family Planning to prevent Vietnam making the same mistakes as China.
In China, the availability of early foetal sex testing has led to a gender imbalance, with authorities concerned that an estimated 100 million Chinese males will be unable to find a wife. The draft Population Ordinance, which is to be submitted to the government later this month, would also outlaw the deliberate termination of female foetuses as well as any technique which allowed parents to determine the sex of an embryo in advance.
