US forces hunt bin Laden as diplomats try to create new government

Efforts to create a broad-based Afghan government have made headway amid intense diplomatic activity in Kabul, while US forces intensify the search for chief terror suspect Osama bin Laden.

International envoys say the Northern Alliance, the new masters of Kabul, have pledged to participate in Inter-Afghan talks, and agreed with UN proposals for the timeframe and location -- probably somewhere in Europe later this week.

Widespread insecurity in the country has been highlighted by news that four international journalists have been killed on the road from the eastern town of Jalalabad to Kabul.

The Pentagon has increased the US military presence in Afghanistan and now has a few hundred commandos tracking Osama bin Laden and his followers, accused of masterminding the September 11 terror attacks on US cities that killed about 4,500 people.

With the air campaign in its seventh week, US warplanes continue to pound Taliban positions around the besieged city of Kunduz, the Islamic militia's last holdout in northern Afghanistan.

As many as 30,000 fighters, are defending the city, including Arab, Chechen and Pakistani forces from the al-Qaeda network.

In Kandahar, base of the militia's leader, Mullah Mohammad Omar, commanders are negotiating with tribal leaders for a peaceful handover of power. US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has rejected any deal to allow Omar to escape.
