Afghan reconstruction needs political stability: conference
International experts have wound up a three-day conference on Afghanistan and agreed that no effort to rebuild the country could succeed without political stability. The conference, in the Pakistan capital Islamabad, brought together 200 participants from around the world for talks on Afghanistan's needs after 23 years of war.
The meeting coincided with the UN-sponsored talks in Germany on forming a new, mutli-ethnic government for the country.
David Lockwood, deputy director of the United Nations Development Program for Asia and the Pacific, says both processes are closely linked.
Mr Lockwood says a long-term reconstruction effort must be led by the people of Afghanistan through a legitimate and broad-based government.
The Islamabad conference agreed on the need for an international fund to coordinate finance for the reconstruction work.
