East Timor assembly delays deadline on constitution

East Timor's Constituent Assembly has voted in favor of delaying its deliberations on the territory's draft constitution to January from this month.

The motion, passed by a wide majority, extended the deadline for passing a constitution from the originally scheduled next Saturday to January 25th.

Assembly members, who began debating a draft constitution on December 3rd, have so far passed 18 of its 151 articles.

The partially U-N administered territory is due to declare independence on May 20th next year.
