40th anniversary of West Papuan declaration of independence

In the Indonesian province of West Papua, also known as Irian Jaya, separatists are looking to avoid clashes with security forces today as they mark the 40th anniversary of their declaration of independence.

As Mark Bowling reports the leaders say they won't raise their banned Morning Star Flag - the Papuan symbol of independence.

During the last month, the Morning Star Flag has flown at half-mast in many towns as Papuans mourn the death of independence leader, Theys Eluay. Separatists claim his murder was ordered by Indonesian security forces. Anti-Jakarta sentiment is running high, even though the Indonesian Government is in the process of handing over greater rights of autonomy to the people of Papua. But separatist leaders have agreed with police to avoid possible bloodshed today by felling supporters not to fly the Morning Star Flag. Even though it's the 40th anniversary of their declaration of independence. Instead, they will hold prayer ceremonies.
