Indonesia to host conference on people smuggling
Indonesia will host an international conference aimed at coordinating a response to increased people trafficking activity in the region.
Foreign Minister Hasan Wirayuda says Indonesia's initiative is to hold an international conference on illegal immigrants in February.
Speaking after a meeting with President Megawati Sukarnoputri. he says the conference, which will be co-hosted with Australia -- a main destination for illegal immigrants passing through the region .
He says the conference will involve countries from where the illegal immigrants come, those used as transit points, the destination countries and international organisations concerned with the isssue.
Mr Wirayuda says the problem of illegal immigrants in the region needs to be settled through an international forum since it's a global problem.
Thousands of people from the Middle East and elsewhere use Indonesia as a stepping stone to reach Australia, trusting their lives to people-smugglers who often use dilapidated and overloaded boats.
