Megawati in West Papua on December
Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri will visit the troubled province of West Papua later this month and may meet local pro-independence leaders.
A government spokesman says Megawati would be in West Papua -- also known as Irian Jaya -- on December 22 and would leave the following day for North Sulawesi.
He says the besides celebrating Christmas in the predominantly-Christian province, the Indonesian President would also use the visit to present a new autonomy law which takes effect on December 22nd.
The official said Megawati was still considering whether she would meet executives of the pro-independence Papua Presidium whose leader Theys Eluay was killed on November the 10th.
Tensions have risen in West Papua since the killing.
Police have yet to make an arrest.
