Nepali prime minister promises to crush rebels

Nepal's prime minister, Sher Bahadur Deuba, has vowed to use "an iron hand" to crush a Maoist revolt aimed at toppling the country's monarchy.

The army launched an offensive to crush the Maoist rebels on Monday after at least 100 people were killed in the worst-ever guerrilla attack last weekend.

The International Committee of the Red Cross says at least 200 people have died and dozens were wounded in clashes between the army and the rebels, who are fighting to install a communist republic.

Mr Deuba says there could be no talks until the Maoists surrendered.
