Cambodian newspaper receives last minute reprieve from closure
The Cambodia Daily newspaper has received a last-minute reprieve from a 15-day suspension after agreeing to correct a misrepresentation of Cambodian history.
The English-language newspaper earlier described the January 7th national holiday as Vietnamese Liberation Day, rather than the official Victory day for Cambodian people over the Khmer Rouge.
Cambodia's Information Ministry Secretary, Khieu Kanharith, says the government allowed the newspaper to print after agreeing to run a correction.
He says the order to temporarily halt publication came on Saturday, but a compromise was reached later the same day during a meeting between the newspaper's editors and ministry officials.
The newspaper is published by American journalist, Bernard Krisher, who says any mistake will be corrected, but the newspaper did not apologize to the government nor had it intended to suspend publication.
