Cambodia completes cuts in military
Cambodia's government has announced the successful completion of an ambitious plan to cut thousands of soldiers from the public payroll.
Senior minister Sok An says the first full-scale demobilisation of 15,000 military personnel has been completed.
Mr Sok An was speaking at a ceremony in the northern province of Kompong Thom, some 200 kilometres from Phnom Penh.
He says the reduction in military expenditure means funds can be re-allocated to health, education, agriculture and rural development.
The government plans to discharge 31,500 soldiers by the end of 2002.
Each demobilised soldier has been given over 400 dollars, 150 kilograms of rice, some cooking oil and other household goods.
