Indonesian president given thumbs down

Two human rights groups in Indonesia have accused president Megawati Sukarnoputri of abandoning reforms and cosying up to figures from the former Suharto regime.

Petisi 50 and the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) say the president is not serious about addressing human rights violations.

They are critical of her appointment of retired general Hendropriyono to head the National Intelligence Agency.

The general was involved in the shooting deaths of student protestors in Lampung in southern Sumatra in the 1980s.

The groups also criticised the plan to abolish the multimillion-dollar corruption charges against former president Suharto as a backward step in the fight against corruption.
