Cambodia's PM ends logging of remaining forests

Prime Minister Hun Sen has vowed to end all logging in Cambodia, saying he will preserve the country's remaining forests.

Mr Hun Sen says no trees will be allowed to be cut down from the start of 2002.

Speaking on national radio, Mr Hun Sen said if any company acted against his ultimatum, the government would arrest the directors and shut down the business without further notice.

Hun Sen said he was no longer willing to allow Cambodia's precious forests to be traded off for foreign currency.

Six logging companies have said the order was a breach of the 30-year contracts issued by the government in 1994.
