Tommy Suharto tried to buy clemency

The youngest son of former Indonesian President Suharto, Hutomo "Tommy" Mandala Putra, is reported to have tried to buy a presidential pardon for almost four million dollars to escape corruption charges.

Tommy Suharto's lawyer Elza Syarief told the AFP news agency she handed almost four million dollars to two men said to be close to former president Abdurrahman Wahid in October 2000.

Ms Syarief says the money was paid to Dodi Sumadi and Abdullah Sidiq Muin after the Supreme Court overruled two lower courts which acquitted Tommy Suharto in the multi-million dollar graft case and ordered him jailed.

Both men have denied receiving any money and former president Wahid, who turned down the plea for clemency, has repeatedly denied receiving any money.
