India launches scathing attack on Pakistan's crackdown on militants

Tension between India and Pakistan has increased following fresh comments from India's Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee.

Mr Vajpayee has dismissed a request by Pakistan for more evidence against Islamic militants, as meaninglessness and uneccessary.

Edmond Roy reports both sides have also continued to exchange artillery and mortar fire across the disputed border in Kashmir:

"Mr Vajpayee was scathing in its attack against Pakistan claiming that the evidence already existed with the Islamic militants responsible for an attack on India's parliament to be extradicted to India immediately. His comments have stepped up the rhetoric once again which in the past 24 hours has been deliberately toned down by both sides. For its part Pakistan reiterated its demand that India needs to provide more evidence if the extradiction of the 20 suspected miltants is to take place. The step up in the rhetoric came as both sides exchanged heavy artillery and mortar fire on the disputed border in the Kashmir region. Both sides are also continuing to build up its troops on either sides of the border in what both say are defensive positions.
