Indonesian police destroy weapons surrendered by Christians and Muslim

In Indonesia's troubled province of central Sulawesi, police have destroyed more than eight thousand weapons surrended by Christians and Muslims.

Jakarta correspondent Mark Bowling reports the move follows peace talks brokered by the Indonesian government and an agreement by Christian and Muslim leaders to end more than two years of sectarian violence.

As a first step, home made firearms, bows and arrows and spears were handed in to police and they are now being destroyed. More than a thousand people have died in fighting. Tens of thousands have been forced from their homes in the worst hit district of Poso. The most recent eruption of violence last November involved armed Muslim gangs which launched a three day attack on Christian villages, Thousands of villagers fled into the surrounding jungle.
