Man gets death penalty for rape of 17 children in Vietnam

A 32-year-old man has been sentenced to death in Vietnam for having raped 17 children over the past two years.

Phan Hoai (hwigh) Linh, who was arrested in December, was convicted by a court in Danang city.

He had previously been sentenced in 1994 to seven years in jail for raping children but was freed in 1999.

Rape of children has been rising in Vietnam, with about 35-hundred cases handled in the last four years.

The death penalty is given in Vietnam for those convicted of raping children under seven years of age.
