Former Khmer Rouge commander in court over backpacker killings

A former Khmer Rouge commander has appeared in a Phnom Penh court, charged with the 1994 kidnapping and murder of Australian, French and British backpackers.

General Sam Bith was escorted into the court in the Cambodian capital under heavy security.

He's charged over the deaths of Australian David Wilson, Briton Mark Slater and Frenchman Jean-Michel Braquet after all three were abducted from a train in southern Cambodia.

Thirteen Cambodians also died in the ambush.

Another Khmer Rouge General has already been jailed for life for his part in the killings.
