US Secretary of State arrives in Islamabad

U.S Secretary of State Colin Powell has begun his Asian tour, arriving in Islamabad for talks aimed at reducing tension between India and Pakistan.

South Asia correspondent Jonathan Harley reports.

The U.S Secretary of State was in Islamabad just three months ago at the height of the American military campaign in Afghanistan. But this trip begins with the focus firmly on the troubled territory of Kashmir, hotly disputed between India and Pakistan and the stage for a heavy military build up by both countries over the last month. Colin Powell's expected to urge a resumption of dialogue between the rival nuclear neighbours as a first step to reducing hostilities in the region. Tensions have eased since Pakistan's President General Pervez Musharraf's conciliatory speech on Saturday in which he condemned terrorism and promised to take a tough stand against any terrorist activities in Pakistan.
