US Secretary of State calls for dialogue between India, Pakistan

US Secretary of State Colin Powell has called for Pakistan and India to renew dialogue on Kashmir as he seeks to ease the threat of war between the nuclear rivals.

Mr Powell, launching a critical South Asian tour that will also take him to India, Afghanistan, Nepal and Japan, held talks with Pakistan's Foreign Minister Abdul Sattar ahead of discussions with President Pervez Musharraf to press his point.

South Asia correspondent Jonathan Harley reports.

The U.S Secretary of State was in Islamabad just three months ago at the height of the American military campaign in Afghanistan. But this trip begins with the focus firmly on the troubled territory of Kashmir, hotly disputed between India and Pakistan and the stage for a heavy military build up by both countries over the last month. Tensions have eased since Pakistan's President General Pervez Musharraf's conciliatory speech on Saturday in which he condemned terrorism and promised to take a tough stand against any terrorist activities in Pakistan.
