$A6-billion pledged for Afghanistan Day one of the conference on rebuilding Afghanistan has wrapped up, with the international community so far pledging more than six billion dollars to help the war-torn nation. The United States, Japan and the European Union have contributed two billion Australian dollars between them. Afghanistan's interim leader Hamid Kazai has welcomed the money, although warned it must be an ongoing comittment. WE HAVE ONE FEAR, THAT WITHOUT THE FULL PARTNERSHIP WITH THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY, AFGHANISTAN MAY FALTER AGAIN. Chairman Kazai has pledged to stamp out corruption, so that the money reaches those who need it and doesn't line the pockets of officials. The conference will continue tomorrow. 22/01/2002 2:45:49 AM | ABC Radio Australia News
