Eurico Guterres charged with crimes against humanity

United Nations prosecutors in East Timor have charged former pro-Jakarta militia leader, Eurico Guterres, with crimes against humanity, including murder.

Mark Bowling reports the U-N prosecutors will seek Mr Guterres' extradition from Indonesia for crimes allegedly committed before East Timor's vote for independence, two-and-a-half years ago:

"Eurico Guterres now lives in Jakarta and is an active member of the ruling party of President Megawati Sukarnoputri. Before fleeing East Timor, Guterres headed the pro Indonesian AITARAK militia, which terrorised independence supporters. The charges against him follow an attack by his militiamen on the house of independence leader Manuel Carasacalao, four months before East Timor's independence vote. Carascalao's son was hacked to death and 11 refugees sheltering in the house were also killed. Guterres denies any role in the killings and says he won't go to East Timor to stand trial.
