Japan's last coal mine closes today

An entire Japanese industry will soon cease to exist.

As Tokyo correspondent Mark Simkin reports the nation's last coal mine will close later today :

Coal was the industry that fueled Japan's economic and military might. In the 1950's there were more than 800 Japanese coal mines, but from today there will be none. The T... mine, Japan's last remaining mine will shut down. One-thousand workers will lose their jobs. It's a victim of globalisation. In recent years Japan's domestic coal industry has simply been unable to compete with cheaper operations overseas, including in Australia. Mark Simkin, Tokyo.
