Thai opposition doubts public reason for PM's second trip to India

Thailand's opposition has renewed calls for the prime minister to prove his trip to India is not motivated by personal business concerns.

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra leaves for a one day trip to New Delhi today, his second in three months.

The Opposition Democrat Party says the Prime Minister is to trying protect private contracts with India, which leases satellite transponders from his family company.

A spokesman for Mr Thaksin says the trip had been organised for some time, but the deputy leader of the Democrats, Abhisit Vejjajiva, has called for proof.

"No I think he needs to give a much more convincing explanation. He is in a position to prove that this visit has been planned for quite some time and when parliament reopens next week I think he should explain it to the House. We think that the real test is whether the broad explanation of his attempt to build up a kind of stronger cooperation, even at the regional level involving India, whether that actually materialises after his visit."
