Pakistan's Musharraf vows to accept referendum result
Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf says he'll accept the people's decision in today's referendum on extending his presidency, promising the vote will be untainted by corruption. In a televised address on the eve of the vote to extend his term by five years, General Musharraf said the election will be "free, fair and crystal clear."
General Musharraf, who has previously refused to say whether he would stand down if he lost the referendum, rejected allegtions the vote was open to fraud. He invited international observers to oversee the polling process.
However, earlier plans requiring citizens to show official identity cards before voting have been scrapped and an indelible ink mark on voters' fingers will be the only technique to prevent multiple voting, a system opponents say will be abused.
General Musharraf seized power in a bloodless coup in 1999, appointing himself president in June last year.
