Japan and Russia agree to fight terrorism
Japan and Russia have vowed to co-operate in the fight against global terrorism.
Japan's new Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi and her Russian counterpart Igor Ivanov signed a joint statement in Tokyo, pledging their co-operation in the fight against the global threat. However the ministers made little progress on a thorny territorial row, Tokyo wants Moscow to return four small islands located between northern Japan and the Kamchatka Peninsula before signing a peace pact.
The islands were seized from Japan by Soviet troops in the last days of the second world war.
The meeting between the two ministers is the first foreign ministerial conference between Japan and Russia since Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi took office in April last year.
