Indonesian investigators to probe Papuan leader's death
A team from the Indonesian armed forces' headquarters has arrived in Irian Jaya or West Papua to begin its inquiry into the murder of a separatist leader -- a crime in which military involvement is suspected.
A 12-man team has started meetings with local military and police leaders.
Army Chief, General Endriartono Sutarto says that witness testimony indicates the possible involvement of members of an elite army unit, Kopassus, in the murder of Theys Hiyo Eluay last November.
The investigators are expected to question all witnesses who have already been interviewed by police who say they have questioned at least seven Kopassus members, but their investigation has stalled.
Mr Eluay was found murdered on November 11. He had been abducted the previous evening by an unidentified group as he drove home from a Heroes' Day celebration hosted by the Kopassus unit in Jayapura.
