Australia's PM enroute to Indonesia

Australia's prime minister John Howard is enroute to Indonesia for a three-day official visit.

One topic that Australia's prime minister John Howard would like to discuss with president Megawati Sukarnoputri is what Jakarta plans to do to stem the flow of asylum seekers from Indonesia to Australia.

But Indonesia's ambassador to Australia Sudjadnan Parnohadiningrat says that with an international conference planned later this month in Bali to deal with this very issue, there's no need for this matter to be discussed now:

"This is an issue that has to be dealt with in the broader context of regional issues, not by Indonesia offering things to Australia. Given the fact that by the end of February we are going to have the international conference, it's too late for us to be offering something in the midst of preparing this conference."
