Japanese opposition steps up pressure on PM after new low on markets
Japanese opposition parties have stepped up pressure on Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, attacking his lack of ability to stop the stock market slide and carry out reforms. Democratic Party of Japan head Yukio Hatoyama told the lower house that recent slumps on the Tokyo Stock Exchange showed the market's disappointment at Mr Koizumi's inability to boost the troubled economy. This came as the Nikkei index hit a new 18-year low ending down point-6 percent at 9,420.
The opposition leader pledged to work together with other opposition leaders to demand Mr Koizumi's immediate resignation, warning that without a transfer of power, structural reforms would not be acheived.
However, during the parliament session, Koizumi renewed his intention to carry out full reforms of the nation's old-fashioned government and revamp the flagging economy.
