Cambodian government urged to help Montagnards fleeing Vietnam
A United States-based human rights group has urged the Cambodian government to keep open the right of asylum for ethnic Montagnards fleeing Vietnam's central highlands.
A spokesman for Human Rights Watch says a recent deal struck between the United Nations, Cambodia and Vietnam on repatriation did not negate Phnom Penh's obligations to asylum seekers.
It says there are numerous reports saying the situation in Vietnam hasn't improved and the underlying issue is that Vietnam continues to define these people as illegal immigrants and not asylum seekers.
Nearly 100 hill-tribe people fled Vietnam's central highlands last week amid efforts by a UN team in Cambodia to repatriate more than 1,000 refugees already under its protection there.
