Ruling party wins Cambodian elections
A landslide win for Cambodia's ruling party in local polls has delivered a major blow to the royalist party and raised questions over who will eventually succeed King Norodom Sihanouk.
Preliminary results showed Prime Minister Hun Sen's Cambodian People's Party will retain control of the vast majority of 1,621 village communes after the first local polls since independence from France in 1953.
Figures for 17 provinces and cities showed the CPP winning 983 commune chief positions, the opposition Sam Rainsy Party 11 and the royalist Funcinpec of Prince Norodom Ranariddh just six.
Ranariddh and Rainsy say they will accept the results, but have joined with poll monitors in denouncing the killings of more than 20 people in the run-up to the poll.
