Refugees from Vietnam forced over border from Cambodia
Cambodian border guards have reportedly forcibly returned refugees to Vietnam's troubled central highlands, flouting pledges to respect the right of asylum which the United Nations says Phnom Penh renewed last month.
A correspondent for armed forces newspaper, the People's Army, says he met fugitives who had been forcibly returned by Cambodian border guards during a tour of one of the region's most troubled districts.
Human rights organisations have claimed that the Phnom Penh governmnent has been forcibly returning Vietnamese asylum-seekers, often to a violent reception from Hanoi.
In a joint statement last month, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch said they had documented abuse, imprisonment and the beating of dozens of Montagnards deported from Cambodia since the refugee exodus from the central highlands began last March.
