US says South Korea's engagement policy with the North, doomed
A senior United States official has warned that South Korean President Kim Dae-Jung's policy of engaging North Korea is doomed without reciprocal measures from Pyonyang.
The comments by assistant Secretary of State for East Asia, James Kelly, came two days before President George W-Bush's departure for the region, which includes a visit to South Korea.
However, Mr Kelly restated to a Congressional committee Washington's support for Seoul's Sunshine Policy, which is designed to re-engage North Korea after 50-years of Cold War isolation.
He says Pyongyang must respond constructively or face self-imposed isolation that most agree will eventually bring about self-destruction.
