UN human rights envoy holds talks in Burma with pro-democracy leader
United Nations human rights envoy Paulo Sergio Pinheiro has met with Burmese democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, as Burma's junta released another six political prisoners to mark his visit to the country.
The military regime freed five other members of pro-democracy parties last week, in an apparent goodwill gesture timed shortly after Mr Pinheiro's arrival for a 10-day mission, his third in the past 10 months.
Since October 2000 Aung San Suu Kyi and top junta officials have been engaged in an unprecedented dialogue that observers hope may be paving the way for democratic reforms in Burma. Diplomats in Rangoon say that before considering lifting sanctions against the regime, their governments are waiting for more concrete results from the talks, including the release of other prisoners and Aung San Suu Kyi herself.
