South Korean schools closed in dust alert

South Korea has closed thousands of schools while patients crowded clinics complaining of eye and respiratory illnesses as dust blown in from China swept across the nation for a second day.

Traffic on the streets of Seoul was noticably lower than usual and domestic flights were badly disrupted by the sandstorms.

Thousands of schools and kindergardens in central parts of South Korea, especially in the Seoul region, were ordered to close because of the dust.

The authorities advised people to stay indoors where possible and many of those who did stray out wore protective masks.
