China warns Taiwan over "creeping independence"
China has angrily warned Taiwan against what it calls "creeping independence".
Analysts say the warning is an indication that US President George W. Bush's recent visit to China has done little to soften Beijing's stance. The Chinese foreign ministry warned that Taiwan would "be made to pay" if it were to rename its representative offices abroad, fearing that the new names would reflect a separate identity for the island.
This came after Taiwan said it was planning to rename its overseas representative offices to make them easier to find for Taiwan residents traveling abroad. Taiwan says the de-facto embassies currently carry names such as "trade mission", "special delegation", or even "travel service", and should be renamed to something more "consistent".
Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Kong Quan reacted angrily to the plans saying they would only increase the tension between the two sides.
