Afghan detainees write to Howard over Afghan government visit

Afghan detainees at the Woomera Detention Centre in South Australia have written to the Prime Minister John Howard, objecting to a proposed visit by Afghan government officials.

A Roman Catholic priest, Father Frank Brennan, is in Woomera and says the level of concern about the proposed visit is such that it was felt Mr Howard was the most appropriate person to write to:

In the letter faxed to Mr Howard, the detainees also state that no adult person sewed the lips of any child and any suggestions they did have offended their dignity.

"The press reports that they had read seemed to indicate that it was a decision of the Australian government at the highest level that such a delegation should be received and they thought it therefore important given the confusion of roles between the foreign minister and the minsiter for immigration in regard to this that the prime minister himself should be brought into the loop."
