Japan to boycott meeting on tuna fishing regulations in Pacific
Japan says it will boycott a meeting to discuss new regulations on tuna catches in the Pacific, claiming the proposed rules cover unnecessarily large areas and lack proper negotiation procedures.
A preparatory meeting will be held in Papua New Guinea today for the Convention on the Conservation and Management of Highly Migratory Fish Stocks in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean.
But, the Japanese Fisheries Agency says it will not send any representatives.
An agency official says the treaty features no discussion procedure, for resolving disputes bilaterally.
The regulation plan, designed to conserve Pacific tuna stocks, was adopted at a 24-nation conference in 2000.
