ASEAN foreign ministers meet to plan counter-terrorism moves
Southeast Asian ministers have pledged a "new era" of cooperation against terrorism, with plans to link efforts to combat militancy and promote the region as a safe place to visit and invest.
They say the discovery of alleged terrorist cells in Southeast Asia with ties to Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network threatens to devastate the region's tourism industry and deter much-needed foreign investment.
Meeting in Thailand, the 10 Association of Southeast Asian Nations foreign ministers moved to counter a growing impression that the region is a hotbed of terrorism.
Singapore's Foreign Minister S. Jayakumar said ASEAN was moving into a new chapter of its history where it faced "one of its most difficult challenges." The ministers also unveiled an agreement between the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia which will allow them to pursue suspected terrorists across land and sea borders for crimes committed on each others' territory.
