Xanana Gusmao poised to become East Timor president on May 20th

East Timor's independence leader, Xanana Gusmao, is one of only two candidates for the country's first presidential election in April.

Mark Bowling reports, Mr Gusmao, who has wide political support, has ended months of speculation by officially nominating as a presidential candidate.

"Xanana Gusmoa is expected to win the presidential vote on April the 14th - his only opponent will be Francisco Amaral who was East Timor's appointed President when Portugal withdrew in 1975. He served for only nine days before the Indonesian military invaded. The new president will take office on May the 20th, the day East Timor becomes formally independent. Mark Bowling Jakarta."
